Glen Johnson Says Chelsea Will Sign The Next Drogba If They Are Prepared To Go All Out For £110M Striker
Chelsea will have a new Didier Drogba if they manage to capture the signature of Napoli’s Victor Osimhen this summer, according to Glen Johnson. Speaking to Paddy Power, the ex-Blues defender said that the Nigerian international has all the attributes to lead the line for Enzo Maresca’s side:
“If I could strengthen only one position, it would be a striker. Whatever striker Chelsea bring in will probably hamper Nicolas Jackson’s development, but this is a results business. If someone’s not doing it, you can’t wait forever and you never know, bringing someone else in for his spot might kick him into gear.”
“Victor Osimhen would bring that Drogba factor to Chelsea. Pace, power, clinical goal machine and that’s what Chelsea need. Maybe Ivan Toney would be worth a shot but that all comes down to financials.”
Osimhen’s asking price remains a big obstacle As Johnson points out, it is still difficult to see how Chelsea can make the deal work financially. Napoli have made it clear that they will only allow the forward to leave if a team triggers his release clause.
€130m (£110m) is a lot of money, and so far the price tag has put off the Blues (as well as the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United) from making an approach for Osimhen. Chelsea could wait until later in the summer Speaking earlier this week, journalist Fabrizio Romano hinted that Napoli may end up lowering their demands and that could lead “many clubs” reigniting their interest in Osimhen.
One additional factor that will be in Chelsea’s favour is the fact that the forward has prioritised a move to the Premier League. The Nigerian has reportedly rejected offers from Saudi Pro League teams as he wants to stay in Europe.
