Jadon Sancho’s first words after Chelsea transfer as private chat Enzo Maresca chat revealed
Jadon Sancho says a phone call from Enzo Maresca sealed his decision to join Chelsea on a season-long loan from Manchester United. The winger had crossed paths with the Blues boss when Maresca was working in Manchester City’s academy, and now the pair reunite at Stamford Bridge.
Sancho will become a permanent signing at the end of the season with his loan deal containing an obligatory purchase clause.
The 24-year-old has not registered in time for Sunday’s clash with Crystal Palace so could make his debut against Bournemouth after the international break. London-born Sancho said he is delighted to be plying his trade back in his hometown.
“I’m really excited to be here. London is where I grew up and I’m happy to be back,” he said. “The manager spoke to me about the project and, for a young player, it’s exciting. Hopefully I can bring goals and assists to the Bridge.”
Sancho revealed that a call from Maresca was what ultimately convinced him to sign for Chelsea.
“I think it’s the manager who really drew me to the project,” he said. “I knew him from his time with Pep Guardiola in Manchester City. He spoke to me on the phone about this project and what he was building here, and for a young player like myself it’s exciting and I can’t wait to get started.
“[Chelsea are] signing me for a reason and to contribute to the team, and I’m ready to do that. I enjoy his [Maresca’s] style of play. “The wingers when they get on the ball, he loves them to go one versus one and be direct. We play a lot of one-twos with the 10s and the striker combination plays. It’s very attractive and it’s a style that I play.”
Sancho joins two other former Manchester City youth colleagues in Maresca’s squad with Cole Palmer and Tosin Adarabioyo both products of the system. Sancho says he is looking forward to playing with them this season.
“I know Tosin and Cole Palmer – he was younger than me when I was at City. I haven’t had a chance to speak to them yet, but I’m sure I will soon. They’re going to be looking out for me, I’m sure.
“I want to bring goals and assists. I’m a skilful player and I want to bring excitement to the Bridge. Hopefully, it will turn out well.”
Speaking more about how the move unfolded, Sancho added: “It’s been a bit crazy. Obviously, it was the last day of the transfer window so it’s expected to be a bit crazy, but I’m really happy it’s all finally done.
“Chelsea is iconic. My idols growing up were Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard and now I have the opportunity to play for this club like them. It’s a great feeling.”
