Report: Teenage defender now wants to join Chelsea despite interest from two Champions League clubs

After coming sixth place in the Premier League last season, Chelsea failed to qualify for the Champions League. However, it looks like they could still beat a couple of clubs in the competition to one player’s signature this summer.

Chelsea have already landed Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Marc Guiu, Omari Kellyman, Tosin Adarabioyo and have a deal in place to sign Estevao Willian from Palmeiras. But it appears that the Blues are not finished yet. A couple of more defenders could be heading to Stamford Bridge before the transfer window closes.

Chelsea winning race for left-back

Chelsea signing 20-year-old Renato Veiga now seems like an inevitability. It has been claimed that the club are set to sign the Portuguese youngster from Basel. After that is wrapped up, it looks like Chelsea could try to conclude a deal for Atlanta United’s Caleb Wiley.

According to CaughtOffside , the Blues are continuing negotiations for his signature. The same outlet claims that AC Milan and Juventus are also keen on Wiley, but the left-back has prioritised a move to Chelsea.

Caleb Wiley’s role at Chelsea

If Wiley does end up joining Chelsea this summer, the 19-year- old may have to wait before he gets a position in Enzo Maresca ‘s squad. The same CaughtOffside report says Chelsea’s plan is to send him to sister club Strasbourg first. With Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell still at the club and Veiga able to play at left-back, it makes sense.

If Cucurella or Chilwell are sold, though, perhaps the Blues will rethink things. But as of now, sending Wiley out on loan may be the best thing to do should Chelsea manage to purchase him. They have signed so many young players recently, including in this transfer window, and their interest in the likes of Wiley and Veiga shows that the club have no intention of moving away from that strategy.
