Romano Shares What He Knows About Chelsea’s Pursuit Of Spanish Ace Whose £51M Release Clause Expires Next Week

Chelsea have not made a move to sign RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Dani Olmo, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. Writing in his Daily Briefing column, Romano said that, while the Spanish international’s agents are in talks with certain clubs, he hasn’t heard anything to suggest that the Blues have been in touch with the player’s camp:

“I’m not aware of contacts with Chelsea at the moment despite links, but let’s see with other clubs. His agents are having conversations but there’s still nothing close or imminent as of now… and nothing before next week.” “Olmo has no preference, just waiting to see which proposals will arrive.”

Will Chelsea make a move for Olmo?

You’d have to say it is unlikely that the Blues will make an approach to sign Olmo, despite the existence of a buyout fee. Any team can pay €60m (£51m) to secure the player’s signature before it expires next Saturday. However, manager Enzo Maresca already has plenty of players in his squad who are similar to the Spaniard, including Christopher Nkunku, Cole Palmer and summer signing Omari Kellyman.

The club are keen on recruiting a winger

It is believed that a more conventional right-footed wide player is among the targets that the Blues are looking to bring in. In terms of possible names, Olmo’s international teammate Nico Williams has been regularly linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge.

There are, though, significant hurdles that will likely stop the deal from going ahead. Although Williams’ €58m (£49m) release clause is pretty reasonable, his wage demands are said to be excessive and that has effectively put an end to the club’s interest. In recent days, an alternative has been suggested in the form of Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma. Whether there are any legs to that rumour, we shall have to wait and see.
